I have a confession to make.
Sometimes I get seriously irritated when I read blogs, websites or emails with really poor grammar. Basic grammar errors are a pet peeve of mine... it's like nails on a chalk board. But I'm not talking about the occasional mistake. I know we're all in a hurry and it's easy to overlook some of your own errors, even while proofreading, because you know how the sentence or paragraph is supposed to read. I understand that you aren't trying to write a formal essay... after all, it's a BLOG! Most of the time we write much more casually, as if we are speaking. I understand all that. I really do. I use "..." more often than I should. I also find myself using "so" and "anyway" too often. But just because we write less formally doesn't mean we should throw all grammar rules out the window.
While visiting numerous blogs and websites tonight I noticed a few reoccurring errors. Every time I saw this one (see below) it seemed to bother me more and more. I started to wonder if it was just an oversight, or if these writers even understood the correct way. I had to do something about it. And so, here you have it. A little grammar lesson for everyone. There's no need to post any comments if you think YOU are one of the offenders. I promise, I have no one specific in mind. I couldn't even tell you where I found the errors if you asked. So don't stress over it.
You (or any other name) and I isn't always the correct phrase. Sometimes you and me is actually correct!
Correct Examples:
Josh and I went to the party.
My mom took Olivia and me to the store.
A quick explanation? It has to do with subjective pronouns versus objective pronouns. I is a subjective pronoun, while me is objective. Use I if you are the subject taking the action. Use me if you are the object receiving the action. If you want to get technical, click here.
If you just want an easy way to remember how to say it correctly, take out the other party and say it as if you were talking about only yourself. You wouldn't say, "Me went to the party." You would say, "I went to the party." Therefore, when you add Josh into the sentence you say, "Josh and I went to the party." You wouldn't say, "My mom took I to the store." Therefore, it is incorrect to say, "My mom took Olivia and I to the store."
Like I said before, I know we all make simple mistakes. I probably made a few in this post. I'm not trying to be critical. It's just been bugging me for so long and after tonight I couldn't handle it any more.
Up next...
The difference between there, their, and they're.

LOL!! My husband is a grammer fanatic.. He hates bad grammer.. The you and I and you and me thing is one of his biggest pet peeves.. When we watch tv he notices everything.. If they get the you and I wrong, he will correct the tv every time.. It makes me laugh.. I am not great with grammer, but I have gotten many lessons and schooling from him.. So I am better than I used to be.. ;)
I know I still make some mistakes every now and then when I'm writing on my blog, but I always notice it when I read other's blogs. Bryce is the only one in his family that can spell or knows how to speak correctly and it drives me crazy!! Your and you're, due and do, their, they're and there - it's all the same to them! But my all time fav is using much instead of many. "How much bananas do we have?" SERIOUSLY??
such a typical Meagan blog...hahaha
I and chantell and me's soon to be baby wunder if yu have to mach tume on yur hends. hahaha
Love, Brock
After the lesson on they're/their/there, could you please mention how it's "The Hatchers" not "The Hatcher's" I see that on SOooo many blogs. I posted on BBC about it, too...
This was a funny post, btw!
I agree with Danielle...I can't wait to see that post!!
Guilty as charged...Now I will go and hang my head in shame. And probably go eat some Halloween candy to make my self feel better! :)
hmm... I promise I do know the difference I just get going to fast and I should go back and re-read them. I hope my blog wasn't too bad.
You are too funny! I loved Tyler's post too. We got ghosted last night, and I had the same thoughts.
Aaaaaaugh! Seriously!! Amen. That, and the complete lack of capitalization and abuse of apostrophes are my huge pet peeves. I get it from my mom. She's been known to correct complete stranges in public places for grammatical errors. I don't go that far, but I do find that I avoid grammatically annoying blogs. Yep, I'm a snob.
(Though I also freely confess to overusing "...", so and anyway. I like to think of my blog as a stream of consciousness.)
The they're/their thing drives me crazy too! In fact there was a great line from Friends (only really funny in context though) when Ross points this out to Rachel in a fight over a long letter she wrote him. You're supposed to think he's uptight - but I was thinking "exactly!"
Please don't judge the typos in my blog... (or my overuse of "...")
LOL!! The other grammer that REALLY bothers me is was vs were... we was at the store?! Really!!!! Do you think texting is going to affect this next generation? P.S. Olivia is absolutely adorable!!!!!!!!!
