Turkey Burger, Anyone?

After I graduated high school I sorely missed my daily date, at 4pm, with Oprah, the couch (and a load of laundry, if my mom was home to make me fold it). Then, I got TiVo about 2 years ago and once again resumed my daily dose of Oprah, but at 10pm instead. Well, let me just say that getting to watch it mid-afternoon again is one of the perks of being a stay-at-home mom.

Did anyone see the recent episode of "Oprah's Favorite Things?" She had the recipe for her new, favorite Turkey Burger. Evidently she discovered this burger at Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump's new private club in Palm Beach. Now, I know none of you really care about Mar-a-Lago, or Oprah for that matter... but I must say that the burger is delicious. I made it for dinner tonight, and it's a winner.

I was going to post the link to the recipe, but maybe someday my posterity will want to try the recipe for themselves (remember, I am making a book out of my blog entries). And, what good is a link in a hardbound book? So, here is the yummy recipe.

Turkey Burger:
INGREDIENTS
  • 1/4 cup scallions, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup celery, finely chopped
  • 3 Granny Smith apples, peeled and diced
  • 1/8 cup canola oil
  • 4 pounds ground turkey breast
  • 2 Tbsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. black pepper
  • 2 tsp. chipotle Tabasco™
  • 1 lemon, juice and grated zest
  • 1/2 bunch parsley, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup Major Grey's Chutney, pureed

Sauté the scallions, celery and apples in the canola oil until tender. Let cool.

Place the ground turkey in a large mixing bowl. Add sautéed items and the remaining ingredients. Shape into eight 8-ounce burgers. Refrigerate for 2 hours.

Season the turkey burgers with salt and pepper. Place on a preheated, lightly oiled grill. Grill each side for 7 minutes until meat is thoroughly cooked. Let sit for 5 minutes.

Serve with a side of Mar-a-Lago Pear Chutney and your favorite toasted bread, pita or hamburger roll.

Pear Chutney:
INGREDIENTS
  • 1 Anjou pear, peeled and diced
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. sea salt
  • 1 1/2 cups Major Grey's Chutney
  • 1/4 cup dried currants or raisins

Preheat oven to 350°.

Toss the diced pears with the cinnamon and salt. Bake on a parchment-lined cookie sheet for 10 minutes.

Cool and mix with the chutney and currants or raisins.

Edited to add: I found the Major Grey's Chutney at Albertson's. I think they're the only store that carries it. Smith's might, but I'm not sure.

Must you always make me look so bad? Dan had leftovers from the Old Spaghetti Factory tonight!

The funny part is that I was going to make homemade french fries to go with them, and a salad. But, I forgot. So, all we had to eat was a burger on a bun. I did at least have tomatoes. Luckily, they were good so it sort of made up for the 2/3 of the meal that were missing, but still. I totally spaced it until I was done grilling the burgers. Oh well. I seem to be failing at all my attempts to be like Martha. She would never have forgotten the side dishes.

Besides, getting that meal from Old Spaghetti Factory took a lot of work. And it was very unselfish of you to take it home to him. After all, you could have left it at the restaurant, or even worse, eaten all the leftovers yourself.

I had never heard of a turkey burger in my life until I started waitressing at Maddox, my last year of college. But they are pretty good.
